Overview

KCI designs and manufacturers therapeutic support systems that assist healthcare providers in managing the chronic and life-threatening complications of patient immobility. These support systems provide clinically proven, cost-efficient therapies that address patient and carer needs in the acute care and long-term care settings and at home. Products and programmes are used to prevent and treat pressure ulcers in addition to providing the support, the comfort and mobility of large patients.

In today’s challenging healthcare environment, clinically proven therapies are not always enough. KCI is dedicated to providing these therapies supported by world class service, continuous education and tailored clinical programmes to facilitate:

Appropriate use of clinically proven therapies
Holistic product and therapy training from in-service to patient use
Programmes and specialists to measure the clinical and economic impact of therapies and initiatives

History

Therapeutic Support Systems provided the foundation upon which KCI began in 1976. Inspired by the need to increase survival rates for critically injured trauma patients, accident and emergency physician Dr. Jim Leininger pioneered the use of “kinetic” or motion therapy to help prevent the pulmonary complications associated with immobility. Since that time, KCI has continued to develop a variety of therapeutic support systems that use science and innovation to address unmet patient and carer needs.

Product Portfolio

Prevention and treatment of Pressure Ulcers: It is estimated that approximately 60,000 deaths occur annually in the United States alone as a result of pressure ulcers, costing the healthcare system an estimated $11 billion annually1. KCI offers a full line of therapeutic support systems that are designed to prevent and treat Stage I and II pressure ulcers. These systems use a variety of technologies, including air, foam, silicon beads and viscous fluids plus GORE^®* medical fabric for advanced management of the skin microclimate.

Prevention and Treatment of Pulmonary Complications such as ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) or VAP (ventilator associated pneumonia): KCI provides automated systems that use either kinetic and/or proning therapies to manage pulmonary complications in the acute care setting.

Kinetic therapy involves the side-to-side rotation of patients 40° or more. Kinetic therapy is provided in KCI products such as the RotoRest™ Delta Advanced and TriaDyne Proventa™ Kinetic Therapy Systems.

Prone therapy involves turning a patient from the supine to prone position and has been studied in peer-reviewed publications. The clinical benefits provided by manual proning include sustaining oxygenation in ARDS patients, promoting drainage of pulmonary secretions, decreasing plural pressure in the lung and eliminating compression of the lungs by the heart. KCI offers the RotoProne™ Kinetic Therapy System that provides automated proning therapy and kinetic Therapy in one therapeutic system.

Bariatric Patient Care: KCI offers a full line of bariatric care products that address the increasing costs and risks associated with caring for large patients. It is estimated that 60 million people in the U.S. are considered obese⁽³⁾, creating the need for a range of products that provide for the safe and dignified handling of patients and provide for maximum carer safety.

The KCI Wound Care Programme^[4]

The KCI approach iis to provide a full range of innovative products that address a variety of carer needs across all care settings. As a leader in clinical education, we offer programmes that partner healthcare professionals with our network of highly trained field personnel. KCI also has the only published pressure ulcer Prevalence and Incidence Survey in the industry. Facilities that conduct these surveys can quantify their current pressure ulcer performance and identify areas for improvement. This begins KCI’s Wound Care Programme Four-Step process and can assist a facility in managing the financial impact of Stage I and II pressure ulcer treatment and prevention.
